Connect in 3 steps

  1. Put your phone/computer on the same Wi-Fi as the TV.
  2. Find the TV’s IP: Roku → Settings › Network › About. Samsung → Settings › General › Network › Network Status. Or tap Scan network.
  3. Roku: go to Settings › System › Advanced system settings › Control by mobile apps › Network access and choose Default. Samsung: accept the “Allow” prompt on the TV.
Use Chrome or Edge (computer or Android). When the browser asks to allow access to your local network, tap Allow. iPhone Safari and Firefox block websites from reaching TVs. On those, use the downloaded file in Chrome on a computer.

What is a universal remote control app?

A universal remote app replaces the plastic remote with your phone or computer. Instead of infrared, modern smart TVs and streaming players listen for commands over your home Wi-Fi network. Roku built an open control interface for exactly this purpose. That's why a well-made remote app can do everything your physical Roku remote does, plus a few things it can't, like typing searches with a real keyboard.

OmniRemote Pro runs right in your browser. There's nothing to install from an app store, and the free version covers everything most people need day to day.

Features that make it feel like a real Roku remote

🎯

Familiar Roku layout

Power, Home, Back, a big D-pad with OK, replay, options and media keys, right where your thumb expects them.

🔊

Hold-to-repeat volume

Hold volume or arrow keys to repeat, just like a physical remote. Mute and channel keys included.

🚀

One-tap apps

Jump straight into Netflix, YouTube, Prime Video, Disney+, Hulu, Max and more without scrolling.

🎤

Voice control

Say “open Netflix”, “volume up”, “pause” or “type stranger things” (Premium).

⌨️

Type on your TV

Stop pecking letters with arrow keys. Type searches and passwords with your phone keyboard (Premium).

⚡

Macros & sleep timer

Record “Movie night” once and replay it with one tap, or have the TV switch off after 30 minutes (Premium).

☝️

Touchpad mode

Swipe to move, tap to select and long-press to go back. Handy with one hand (Premium).

🔍

Network scan

Can't find your TV's IP? The scanner searches your Wi-Fi for Roku devices automatically.

💾

Multi-device + backup

Save several TVs, switch between rooms in one tap, and export a backup of your setup.

Which TVs and devices does it work with?

Here's what you can control today and how each brand connects. We'd rather be upfront than promise “every TV ever made”.

Brand / deviceConnectionStatusControl coverage
Roku Express, Streaming Stick, UltraWi-Fi✔ Full support
Roku TVs: TCL, Hisense, onn., Sharp, Insignia, Philips, JVC, RCA, WestinghouseWi-Fi✔ Full support
Samsung Smart TV (Tizen, roughly 2016–2020)Wi-FiBeta
LG, Sony, Vizio, Fire TV, Apple TV, Google TVWi-FiRoadmap
Soundbars, projectors, cable boxesHDMI-CEC via your RokuIndirect
Tip: If your soundbar or cable box is connected to a Roku TV over HDMI, the TV can often pass power and volume commands to it through HDMI-CEC. So controlling the Roku TV can control the whole setup.

How to connect your phone to your Roku TV in 3 steps

Join the same Wi-Fi

Your phone (or laptop) and your TV must be on the same home network. Guest networks and mobile data won't work.

Allow mobile app control on the Roku

Press Home, then go to Settings › System › Advanced system settings › Control by mobile apps › Network access and choose Default. Most Roku devices already have this on.

Add your TV in OmniRemote Pro

Tap Scan network, or find the IP under Settings › Network › About on your Roku and type it in. Press Test, then Add device. That's it.

Important: For security, web browsers don't let a website talk to devices on your home network. To control a real TV, use the downloadable version of the tool on a phone or computer connected to your Wi-Fi. The version embedded on this page runs in demo mode with a virtual TV, so you can try every button first.

7 pro tips for a smoother remote experience

Reserve your TV's IP address

In your router settings, set a DHCP reservation for the TV so its IP never changes and you never need to re-add it.

Bookmark it on your home screen

Add the tool to your phone's home screen so it opens like an app.

Use keyboard shortcuts on a laptop

Arrows move, Enter selects, Space plays/pauses, + and − change volume, M mutes and H goes home.

Name devices by room

“Bedroom TV” beats “Roku 3” when you switch rooms at night.

Build a “Movie night” macro

Home → Netflix → volume up. One tap gets everything ready (Premium).

Wired Roku? Check the IP range

If your TV uses Ethernet, it must be on the same network range as your phone (for example, both 192.168.1.x).

Export a backup

Save your devices and macros once, and restore them on a new phone in seconds.

Frequently asked questions

Can I control my Roku TV without the remote?

Yes. Any Roku player or Roku TV on Wi-Fi can be controlled from your phone. Connect both to the same network, make sure “Control by mobile apps” is set to Default, and add the TV in OmniRemote Pro.

Is OmniRemote Pro really free?

Yes. The free version includes the full remote, Wi-Fi control, network scan, 2 saved devices and 4 one-tap apps. Premium adds voice, typing, touchpad, macros, sleep timer, unlimited devices and no ads.

Does it work with every TV brand?

Not yet, and we won't pretend otherwise. Roku players and all Roku TVs are fully supported, and Samsung Tizen TVs are in beta. LG, Sony, Vizio, Fire TV and others are on the roadmap. You can still save them as demo devices.

Does my phone need an IR blaster?

No. OmniRemote Pro controls your TV over Wi-Fi, so any phone, tablet or computer works, iPhone included.

Why does the remote on this page say “Demo mode”?

Browsers block secure (HTTPS) websites from contacting devices on your home network. Download the tool and open it on a device on your Wi-Fi for real control. The demo lets you try every feature first.

My TV isn't found by the scan. What now?

Check that both devices are on the same Wi-Fi (not a guest network), that “Control by mobile apps” isn't disabled, and that the subnet in the scan box matches your network. You can always type the IP from Settings › Network › About.

Can I turn my Roku TV on from my phone?

Usually yes, as long as the TV stays connected to the network in standby. Roku TVs with Fast TV Start turned on keep Wi-Fi active while “off”, so the power button works.

Is it safe to let apps control my Roku?

Roku designed this open control interface for remote apps, and it gives no access to your Roku account. Only devices on your own Wi-Fi can send commands, so keep your Wi-Fi password-protected.
