How to jump start a car (Overview)
If your car does not turn when the ignition is switched on, the car battery may be empty.
Cleaning the top of the battery where the connector meets the positive and negative connections can make it work again.
If the car does not turn after securing connections and restarting, you must start it.
Starting a car quickly is a fairly simple process, but it can also be a dangerous task. Read on for instructions on how to jump start a car.
1. Get ready. :
Put on a pair of work gloves and wear eye protection before you start working under the hood of your car.
Place both vehicles within the range of the batteries and the length of the jumper cables. Vehicles may not be touched.
2. Set it up. :
Apply the parking brake and switch off all electrical connections.
The headlights, the audio system, and the heating/cooling system must be switched off. Disconnect your portable devices from the mains as they can be fried by a burst of energy.
3. Connect positive with positive. :
Connect the positive end of the jumper wire with the empty battery to the positive terminal of the vehicle, and then connect the other positive end of the cable to the positive terminal of the charged car battery.
4. Connect negative to negative. :
Connect the negative end of the jumper cable with the charged battery to the negative terminal of the vehicle, and then connect the other end of the negative cable to a secure, unpainted metal part of the engine. This last step grounds the circuit.
5. Watch before proceeding. :
Before proceeding to the next step, make sure that the cables are routed properly. In addition, the cables should not be near a moving part.
6. Start your engines. :
Start the car’s engine with a charged battery and let it idle for up to 5 minutes.
With the car engine charged, try to start the car engine from the empty battery. If you cannot turn on the empty battery, wait a few minutes and try again.
Disconnects
Once the car has started with the empty battery, you can keep the cables between the cars connected for a few minutes while the car is still running before disconnecting.
When you’re ready to disconnect, do the reverse. You are done and your car should be ready to drive.
To avoid these inconveniences, make sure the lights are off when you get out of your car.
This is the most common cause of a flat battery. Keep your engine clean and the battery-free of rust and grease. Make sure you have good jumper cables with you.
Driving without these cables is silly and a bad set is useless. They’re pretty cheap, though it’s worth investing in a more expensive set that is guaranteed to work when the time comes.
Perform a final check before starting to ensure that the jumper wires are securely connected to the car and not near moving parts of the engine.
You can now start the bridge car and leave it idling for a few minutes.
Once idle has been completed for about five minutes, you can start the standing car.
After starting the stationary vehicle, make sure that both vehicles remain switched on and are idle for about 5 minutes.
